Dr Drew Cronin
MBBS FRACS (Plast.)
Dr. Drew Cronin is a well-versed plastic and reconstructive surgeon who specialises in the areas of complex skin cancer excision and reconstruction, breast reconstruction, head and neck cancer excision and reconstruction, body contouring and hand surgery.
After completing post-graduate medical studies at Griffith University, he then went on to further his specialised training with rotations at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, Gold Coast University Hospital, Mater Brisbane Hospital and the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital.
“I remember the exact moment I knew I wanted to be a plastic surgeon. It was the moment – as a wide-eyed junior resident – that I witnessed that plastic and reconstructive surgery could almost appear like surgery and wizardry combined! I had just seen a patient with a jaw tumour that had to be resected and was amazed at how the plastic surgeon reconstructed the jaw and cheek with a ‘spare part’ bone and skin from his leg.”
Dr. Cronin has firmly established himself as an outstanding surgeon and carer in this specialised field of medicine. He is an Associate Lecturer at the University of Queensland’s School of Medicine, and in 2016 was the winner of the prestigious Emmett Prize, awarded for most outstanding registrar research in Australia and New Zealand.
Since then, he has presented research at national and international conferences on breast reconstruction, skin cancer, hand surgery and head and neck reconstruction and also serves on the doctor’s advisory board for Avant, Australia’s largest medical defence organisation.
“Plastic surgery patients present with their own specific problems and concerns. Often, they’ve been embarrassed or withdrawn because of these concerns. Sometimes their issues are complex and unique and require you to think laterally in order to formulate a surgical treatment.
The biggest thrill in plastic surgery is when you work with your patient to identify these goals and provide them with an outcome that exceeds their expectations.”
He is a member of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS), The Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), and the Royal Australian College of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS).
Dr. Cronin has a full and balanced life outside of work. As a previous representative at the Youth Olympics for Rowing and a volunteer lifesaver, he enjoys as much beach and boating time as possible with his family.
Dr. Cronin has also been involved in several charitable interests, most notably Hope4Health, an organisation that aims to improve health outcomes for local, rural, indigenous and international communities.
