Dr Matthew Cheng is a plastic and reconstructive surgeon at Valley Plastic Surgery, bringing comprehensive surgical training and clinical experience to his practice. As a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in Plastic Surgery, Dr Cheng provides care across both aesthetic and reconstructive procedures for patients throughout Brisbane and surrounding areas.

Dr Cheng completed his medical degree before undertaking specialist training in plastic and reconstructive surgery. His interest in the technical aspects of surgery led him to pursue advanced research, earning a PhD in breast tissue engineering. This research contributed to advancing reconstructive techniques and has been recognised in medical literature.

About Dr MATTHEW CHENG

“As a medical student, the first ever surgery I saw was a breast reconstruction; I was both astounded and curious that surgeons could use spare tissue from the body to recreate a missing part to restore form and function. The technical expertise needed to combine big open surgery and fine microsurgery to create and shape a breast from abdominal tissue really resonated with me.”

At Valley Plastic Surgery, Dr Cheng’s practice encompasses cosmetic breast surgery, body contouring procedures, and facial aesthetic surgery. He also provides treatment for skin cancer and melanoma, offering patients comprehensive plastic surgery care. His training enables him to address various surgical needs across different areas of the body.

“I appreciate the breadth of plastic surgery training. We develop skills to operate on every part of the body, building a comprehensive surgical toolkit. This allows me to combine facial procedures with breast surgery and body contouring, and when needed, manage skin cancer concerns for the same patient.”

Dr Cheng’s approach centres on understanding each patient’s individual circumstances and surgical goals. He takes time during consultations to discuss available options, explain procedures clearly, and ensure patients have realistic expectations about their surgery. His communication style aims to help patients feel informed throughout their surgical experience.

Professional development remains important to Dr Cheng’s practice. He regularly attends medical conferences to stay current with surgical techniques and advances in plastic surgery. He maintains active membership with the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons and the Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, organisations that uphold professional standards in the specialty.

Outside his medical practice, Dr Cheng enjoys spending time with his wife Dr Linda Cheng, a General Practitioner, and their son. He maintains an active lifestyle, occasionally competing in triathlons and following the NRL season with enthusiasm.

Patients considering plastic surgery can arrange consultations with Dr Cheng at Valley Plastic Surgery’s Fortitude Valley clinic. Initial consultations provide opportunity to discuss surgical options, understand the procedures involved, and receive detailed information about costs and recovery expectations. Dr Cheng works with each patient to develop appropriate surgical plans based on their individual needs and circumstances.

FAQs - Fees & Costs:

You will have 1-2 consultations with Dr Cheng prior to any cosmetic surgery. Your first consult will take approximately 45 minutes depending on the procedure you are interested in and will cost $355. If you have a Medicare card you may be eligible for a rebate, more if you have a valid referral letter from you GP or Specialist. All consult fees are payable in full on the day of your consultation or prior to your consult for telehealth appointments.

A follow-up consultation may be available, should you require a follow up consultation or to answer any additional questions relating to the surgical plan for your upcoming surgery. This appointment will be shorter than your initial appointment and is free of charge.

The clinical nurse team and client support officers are also available via phone and email and can further assist with any questions you may have in relation to fees, hospitals, garments, and the logistics of your procedure.

Once you have met with Dr Cheng and discussed the surgical options available to you, one of our VPS client support officers will provide you with a detailed fee estimate that will include your surgeon’s fees and any out-of-pocket costs (also known as “a gap”) you may incur.

Your out-of-pocket costs are the difference between your surgeon’s fee and the rebate you receive from Medicare and your private health insurance if applicable. Your quote will also include estimates of other fees that will apply for your surgery including hospital, anaesthetist, pathology, prosthesis or implant costs as required. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have sourced quotes directly from these additional suppliers.

Please understand that our client support officers are available to go through any details and answer questions pertaining to the costs of a surgery and we will be clear and transparent in all our communication with you with regards to costs.  There is no obligation for you to book surgery after your first consult and you can take away all the information we provide to you whist you consider your options to proceed.

NB: Estimates are valid to 6 months from the date of issue during which time a surgical booking can be made for within 12 months of the date of the estimate.

If you are uninsured you will be provided with an estimate of fees for your chosen hospital. You will also be given the contact details for your anaesthetist.

A 7 day cooling off period applies for all adults who are consenting to a major cosmetic surgical procedure. You will not be required to pay for your surgery at the time of your appointment, but a deposit may be required to secure a surgery date.

If you are having a procedure in a hospital, your surgeon’s fee is due no later than four weeks prior to your surgery date. Following your surgery you will receive an itemised receipt to claim any benefits back, if applicable.

As a general rule, plastic surgery for cosmetic reasons is not covered by private health insurance funds or Medicare.

Some operations, that have a significant functional aspect, may be considered medical rather than cosmetic and, as such, may attract a small rebate. To apply, your procedure must be deemed as medical by Dr Cheng, and attract a Medicare item number. If applicable, this will be outlined in your quote.

Dr Cheng is a member of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), which is the peak body representing the field of plastic surgery in Australia. Currently, the ASPS Code of Practice requires that members do not enter into any arrangements with patients to assist them in obtaining finance to pay for a procedure, such as offering a credit facility (other than the use of a credit card), introducing the patient to a credit provider or providing information about possible loans.

Some patients choose to book their procedure in advance with a deposit and then schedule regular payments towards their surgical fee prior to their proposed surgery date. Payments will be arranged to suit the patient’s circumstances, whilst ensuring the final balance is settled two weeks prior to surgery. Contact us to find out more information.

Dr Cheng currently only takes consultations at Valley Plastic Surgery, Fortitude Valley.

Firstly, there is a 7-day cooling off period prior to any cosmetic procedure.

When you are ready to schedule your surgery, a VPS client support officer will discuss available dates with you. As you can imagine, different surgeries carry varying availability, depending on the magnitude (length) of the procedure, the hospital you choose to have the procedure at and any relevant wait times or constraints that the hospital is experiencing.

We additionally have a waitlist system that will allow you to both book a surgery date whilst also going onto a waitlist should anything become available sooner. Our team will endeavour to accommodate your preferred date requests and will keep you informed of any changes.
