Understanding protein’s impact on post-surgical healing
If you’ve recently had surgery – or in the process of planning for your procedure – you may be wondering about the best ways to support your body through recovery. Together with accredited practicing dietitian Jonathan Steedman, we guide you through one of building blocks of the healing process – protein!
Why is protein important?
Envision protein as the essential substance your body requires to repair and rejuvenate tissues damaged during surgery. During this critical phase, your body’s demand for protein increases to aid in the healing process. Ensuring your diet includes sufficient protein can significantly enhance your body’s resilience and recovery speed. It’s also vital in maintaining muscle integrity when your mobility might be temporarily reduced.
Beyond tissue repair, protein fulfils a key role in sustaining a robust immune system, helping to protect against post-operative infections. Additionally, protein is vital for collagen production, a protein that’s paramount for wound healing and skin elasticity.
So, how much protein should you be getting both before and after your surgery and how can you increase your intake?
“Lean meats like chicken and turkey, fish, eggs, dairy products, legumes, nuts, and tofu are fantastic sources of protein,” explains Jonathan Steedman. “Try to incorporate these into your meals in balanced amounts. And if you’re not able to get enough from your diet, a chat to a dietitian about protein supplements could prove to be helpful.
“However, it’s important to remember that balance is key. An excessive intake of protein can be counterproductive, so it’s about finding the right balance for your recovery. If you are intentionally consuming protein at all your meals and snacks throughout the day, then you will likely meet your postoperative protein needs.”
The surgical recovery process can be quite an energy intensive process. It’s important to note that whilst you think you’re napping and ‘doing nothing’ the body is working extremely hard to heal wounds and repair tissue. Jonathan counsels to make sure you’re eating enough during the recovery phase to ensure your body has the energy to heal, and to include foods rich in anti-oxidants, such as fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds.
Consulting with a dietitian as you undertake this surgical journey can really assist with your goals.
“A dietitian will help you navigate the sometimes-confusing world of nutrition and dietetics, covering everything from body types to supplements and much, much more,” says Jonathan. “Together, we workshop ways to simplify a balanced and healthy eating plan and distil some of the misnomers that are inaccurate or no longer serve you.”
Adopting healthier habits is not just a transient practice; it can prolong the remarkable benefits of your surgery well into the future. Stay committed to a balanced diet and regular activity and afford your body the compassion and care it needs during this healing journey.
